MANTRA, TANTRA AND
PURE EXISTENCE

An essay by Doug Mackey about how Pure Existence may offer a higher integration to yogic and tantric approaches to enlightenment

TRANSPOSITION  by John Lentz

Looking for the source of life is the underlying motivation for all human beings. Some know and act specifically on that desire, turning their lives into a search for truth. Others seek it in a disguised form through ongoing activity: a job, entertainment, recreation, philosophical inquiry, scientific investigation, artistic illumination and religion, as well as the deep desire to have children. Those who consciously seek to know their origins do so by responding directly to impulses arising from that source. If they respond directly to those impulses, they do so, not through established forms, such as, religion, healing, meditation and prayer, but through a hyperconscious awareness of their every thought and experience.

As conscious seekers establish a greater capacity to receive impulses from source, they eventually become aware of two primary conditions of life.  First, they become aware that source is seeking them even more than they are seeking source; then they realize that they are a conscious part of a self-existence loop between source and its manifestation, the seeker. After these two realizations occur (and they make take years to mature), seeking ceases and exploration begins. Every moment is dominated by a desire to gaze into the vast, uncharted territory that underlies personal existence. Most people, however, are not willing to shed the protective garments of everyday life in order to explore its confounding mystery. Instead, they hold on to beliefs about God and the universe as the unexamined platform of experience. Those who live out of the pure astonishment that they exist do so by shedding all accepted beliefs. They know themselves as the means by which that mystery explores itself. “ I am it!” In this union of individual life and the underlying vastness of which it is an expression, one could say that one has union with “God.”

The term “God” is used here as a convenient means to refer to the one truth that imbues all aspects of experience. It is easily discarded in favor a direct cognition of the field of pure existence as the doorway into the utterly ungraspable: Life has neither a beginning nor an end; individual experiences rise like mist that condense into drops of knowing only to fall almost immediately back into emptiness. The meaning of this emerging from and disappearing into emptiness does not conform to any philosophical or religious formulations. Instead it presents itself as a living intelligence stirring within an essence that has “field” qualities more than an exalted sense of a God-like other. If a search for God renews itself in this reality, it does so without the robes of temporal contemplation. It is always just it. The pure apprehension of world things, regardless of the personal life story out of which it emerges, becomes aware of itself as a mere bauble of consciousness upon a string of awareness possibilities that stretch into infinity. This moment never changes even as experiences come and go. The splendor of existence as itself overwhelms the conditions of individual life, leaving them as pointless limitations upon an  infinite ocean.

It is not unusual for grief to surround these apprehensions. Although the veils of thought, emotion and sense have been pierced by a knowing that cannot be denied, the personal life story continues as if nothing has happened. Grief, which can potentially overwhelm the individual life, arises both through the loss of comforting illusions and, on the other hand, through the loss of pure cognition when it becomes clouded by the push and pull of world. Not withstanding the mind’s predilection for taking credit for all experiences, the awesomeness of knowing how vaporous the world is eventually makes the cognizing mind bow to the inevitable collapse of its defenses. The deeper the bow, the more likely the heart will rise to meet the infinitude of possibilities that put its experience into an unexpected perspective. The grace of the heart brings the perplexed  mind into alignment with an intent which is slow to reveal itself.

As grief peals away the mind’s grip on life, it exposes the more deeply affected, unseen inclination that is the foundation of personal existence. This inclination, the soul, whose reality is always susceptible to re-evaluation, is forced to give up its illusions as its  contemplation of the mere fact of its existence ripples through the life it supports. The soul’s perception of itself, supported by many incarnated lifetimes of experience, gives way to an entirely new quality of knowing and being. Its surrender to the undeniable truth which lies behind the veils of earthly life draws the soul into a crisis that makes it reject everything it has experienced or known. Only when the soul turns itself away from the world and the human lives it guides to confront the emerging mystery arising within it, does the it realize that its voyage through earthplanet plane has been guided by a power and intent that it has never realized. It must accept the bottomless reality of its existence as only one impulse within a field of infinite possibilities, whose structure is entirely different from the conditions of life which, for eons, has been the justification for its being. The soul must now accept that its knowledge of life, which it has been trying to transmit to human beings saturated with life’s passions, has itself been merely a transitional element within a greater impulse of spiritual integration. The guidance it has offered to beings of the world has always been the hallmark of life well lived, but now the soul must grapple with a greater intent that cannot be expressed through its assumed purpose for living. It takes an astonishing degree of surrender for the soul to accept that the self-knowing mystery of life, which has remained a hidden influence upon even the finest details of living, has stirred up specific energies to fulfill an eternally “old,” non-temporal and non-spatial intent that is astonishing in its vastness and intimidating in its power. The deepest challenge to the soul, already in grief about being bound to a world no longer under its influence, is the realization that spirit, the field of pure existence, functions at a level of reality that is incompatible with the modes of living that are the foundation of its experience. As startling it may sound, nothing short of the death of the soul as the defining factor in how the world is perceived will release the individual human being from its imprisonment within the soul’s now irrelevant powers of cognition.

From the tender whispers that slip through the last protective veils of its self-knowing, the soul comes to an acceptance of what must be and opens the hereto fore hidden lotus of its being for a final revelation. Nothing in any previous life experience, whether in the ephemeral, home domain of its immediate reality or in dense passages through the world, can prepare it for the fabulous knowings about the infinitude of being. Realization upon realization descend upon the soul like rain falling softly from a spring sky. Braced against the fires of infinite energy by a love that could only be acknowledged as God, the soul sends gossamer reflections about its new perceptions into that love as a grateful offering for the shattering of its illusions. These gifts of love from the one real being flow into the soul with a tenderness that defies possibility. With each impulse of naked knowledge, one diaphanous veil after another is removed from the soul to expose  its naked core. Then, from within finest trembling of its self-knowing, the soul’s truest longing carries it into the great flame of love that is its progenitor being. Ancient beyond ancient beyond ancient in its realization of pure existence, this most terribly beautiful being of no horizons receives the soul that has now fulfilled its purpose. Accepting its fate as a temporary vessel of God-intent, the soul dies into the nothing that is the bottomless well of being.

This godbeing, eternally grappling with the awareness that it exists, takes into itself the astonishment of a soul who has successfully traversed the landscapes of earthly travail and has fulfilled the single purpose behind its existence. This blazing sun of infinite exultation, this love that arises out of an awareness of itself as infinite beauty turns its gaze to the lines of light left by the now extinguished soul on its journey back to the sacred fount of its creation.

This ancient beyond ancient being, who has had only itself as an object of contemplation, has, since bursting out of the event horizon imbedded in the abyss of absolute nothing, always been dominated by its contemplation of the grandeur of its being. But now, from out of the depths of its self-revelatory fires, it confronts a terrible knowing. That something, which has always been the blindly sought after object of its meditation, reveals itself with it a shattering realization that this godbeing, this absolute singularity of pure existence, is the tiniest of the tiniest of astonished reflections arising within an intent, the magnitude of which, the possibility of which, could never have been contemplated while it was absorbed in its fascination with the worlds springing whole out of its imagination. Within an anticipation of something terrifying about to happen, this terrible yet humbled being, questions its aloneness within its  singularity-space where no being like itself exists. It affirms. There is something to do. Something to be accomplished. It knows and acts.

Drawing from its infinitely creative fount, the Lord and Master of all things of earth and beyond, imagines into existence an indestructible replica of itself, a child of pure possibilities which, even to the Lord and Master of all things, carries unrevealed secrets for earthly living. This newly imagined godbeing, elemental in its form, descends silently through the lighted way of one soul’s passage. With a reluctance that is overruled by the invincible intent of its creator, this elemental godbeing, newly awake to the godspace that is the womb of its existence, takes on the veils of object-reality, never losing the cognizance that it carries fresh intent from beyond the godbeing-love that created it. Gradually, as mind and sense wrap themselves around the godbeing’s fired core, it realizes, with as much sorrow as anticipation, that its purpose for existence is dominated by an intent to help guide the earth to its fulfillment. From behind the dark veils of material substance, it takes on its role as harbinger of apocalyptic doom, supported only by the knowledge that it assumes the splendorous power of its godness to the degree that its progenitor godbeing, the terrified sun of pure existence fire, surrenders ever more deeply into the most impossible of impossible contemplations.

Desperate for the instruments of living -- mind, body and sense -- to receive the impulses of life that will allow it to fulfill its mission, the now incarnate godbeing moves through the world testing the viability of its purpose. It feels the unseen currents of energy that are gradually withdrawing from earthplanet. Only through regular meditation, however, can it sustain the god-driven intent that is its life-force. Without meditation, the godbeing would quickly lose itself in the demanding conditions of life.

Gradually, the godbeing realizes that its mission has not been entrusted to it as a single person. Engaged in daily life like any other human being, it silently acts with others like itself. Dozens upon dozens of godbeings, having slipped into the world in  stealth, comprise an organized body of living intelligence responding to the purpose imbued into it by the greater godbeing beyond. Its meditation is their life. Without it they would vanish instantly. What each incarnate godbeing knows is that even the smallest of actions is inspired by the faintly stirring impulses of the meditating godbeing beyond. A breath, a thought, or the apprehension of beauty – such human experiences are enough to satisfy the purpose of their incarnations.

Love is coming. They know. Those who resist will be lost in the crumbling towers of fear and arrogance. No one who has aspired to rise above the retreating tides of cosmic energy will be left behind to suffer the loss of life-integrity. After the tide has fully withdrawn from the godspace in which the earthplanet has been nesting, the void will nurture in silence the seed realities which have not been viable within earthplanet life. They will re-emerge reformed and regenerated into planetary existence upon the next rising tide of life returning. In timeless cycling of life and not-life, governed by a cosmic will inaccessible even to the greater godbeing, earthplanet will eventually produce enough love-substance to move the greater godbeing out of mediation and energize its movement onto a higher platform of pure existence.

The struggles of the disguised godbeing helping to prepare the earthplanet for its regenerative sleep brings it into discord with the human body. Few bodies are capable of sustaining the naked energy of godspace. To the godbeing, its original home feels like a black fire burning through a body never meant to sustain naked reality. Wave after wave of descending livingness, unborn as pure existence, approach the human host in order to prepare its psychology for god-truths that will release the intent of the greater godbeing into the world. The souls of these god-imbued human beings, which have defined the existential conditions of their human reality, have been removed from the inner dimensions from where they have guided human life. Their destiny is collectively to provide sustenance to ascending human life as it is released from the bondage of world experience.

The grace of knowing anything of this radical transformation of earthplanet serves the stirrings from beyond the greater godbeing. Alone within the reality of one indefinable yet continual moment in which it finds itself timelessly aware, this godbeing has brooded over the infinite energy that somehow did not overwhelm its integrity as a specific being. World after world have arisen within its ongoing meditation, offering the possibility of grasping the condition in which it existed. Nothing, however, from the worlds it purveyed arising mysteriously out of its creative fount could diminish  the necessity of it fully grasping its reality. Absolute in its existence, being existence itself, the godbeing has wrapped worldly veils around itself to shield itself from the infinite fire of pure existence. Chaotic in its intensity, containing all forms of all possible realities seeking to reveal the totality of itself in a single burst of cosmic madness, this hidden dragon is somehow contained through a built-in mercy that generates, instead, an infinite array of cosmic realities. Startled by the failure of any of its planetary projections to reveal and fulfill a raw intensity it dare not touch within it, the godbeing that is the origin of many earthplanet realities finally becomes aware of the insignificance of the worlds it has guided to what now appears to be illusory revelations. Faced with the possibility that the planetary shields provided by its questioning of itself are failing, making greater the possibility of confronting the dragon of god-bursting possibilities, the godbeing in whom this writing occurs as an infinitesimal current of its intelligence realizes that the imagined purpose for generating these worlds is only a potential possibility within its creative potentiality and has no absolute purpose beyond the pure fact of cognition. Accepting that this earthplanet contains no possibility of relieving the perplexity of its condition, the godbeing plunges into a final meditation that will either lift it out of its now compromised condition into an unknown too terrifying to contemplate, or it will wither within the a diminishing illumination until it expires from pure exhaustion, disappearing into the void like its imaginary earthplanet. Nothing will save it if the fear of transposition overcomes its realization that its dwelling place in this dimension of quantum possibilities is collapsing into itself.

As it spirals deeper into the indefinable depths of godspace, both within the fabric of its knowing and outside the familiarity of its cognition, the greater godbeing arrives at that point where its primary illusion is structured. It discovers that this illusion is the very essence of its quantum condition. It is that and always that; nevertheless, its location within godspace is specific to its quantum reality. The apprehension of infinitude is as shattering to a greater godbeing as to a lesser and even to the rare human being who dares to drop its veils momentarily. Infinite is infinite. Nothing can grapple with that reality without the fear of losing itself, with or without planetary distractions. This realization is the end of meditation. No intent, no recollection, not even the finest surrender of its life force into the unknown can shake the certainty that a reality beyond itself exists, even if it does not reveal the passage to it.

Spiraling out into familiarity from this revelation, the greater godbeing, the dreamer of one planet after another in search of its truth, collects threads of its new realization and weaves them into new intent. New knowledge of a vastness beyond its vastness changes its contemplation of earthplanet. First thought to be a veil protecting it from unmanageable infinitude and then thought to be the ground where it tested the extent of its creative powers, earthplanet falls under a new, penetrating gaze.

From beneath the cloak of the elemental godbeing’s human life, the spark of livingness that supports its earthly presence swells into new cognition. The godbeing realizes that it must suspend its preoccupation with the stories of life and actively serve the purpose of its incarnation. Powers of expression ascend from the hidden fount of pure creation and take over the instruments of its human action. Mind, senses and emotion are subsumed by the non-dreaming reality, which has nothing to do with the human drama. Unfolding like a flower made of living emptiness, the pure existence godbeing translates its indivisible, self-existent condition into a truth that pushes aside all illusion. From beyond the stars and planets of human imagination, from beyond the depths of mind that are a cesspool of dark desires, a wave of untarnished life emerges like a single eye that sees nothing but truth. Its presence alone within the dark corridors of human life is enough to change the earth dream forever. Nothingness rules. Godspace is revealed. Heaven and hell and the imagined god, real only upon the inner eyelids of eyes that do not see, evaporate like a mist. Godbeings are the real beings, serving infinity in a way that human beings, locked in the dark caves of ignorance, could never imagine.

With the softest of soft footsteps, never touching the ground of illusion, the godbeing projects into the world the truth emerging from its self-sustained silence. Remembering what it never was, assuming the intent of the greater godbeing’s meditation, the elemental godbeing becomes a living whisper streaming back into itself as the ear that hears. Shedding the cloak of object-reality, it transmits the impulses of the greater godbeing into the densely imagined world that arose out of the confusions of the greater godbeing’s infancy. The world-dream is ending, leaving nothing behind for the collective human mind to contemplate. Human aspirations sink into irrelevance as dream-shattering waves of truth drive the clouds of ignorance from human eyes ready to see. These special beings, human beings who have already transcended even the most well-developed spiritual contemplations, gather under the godbeing’s cloak as it opens to receive them. The absorption of only a few human beings into godspace diminishes the life force of the world and precipitates a decline that no amount of human genius or compassion can resist. Passing through the channels of the greater godbeing beyond, through the elemental godbeing walking the earth and into the human beings who are no longer moved by the passions of the race, the cosmic life force signals its intent to withdraw like a tide sliding back into the sea. This godbeing knowledge, walking silently in the world, is all that is needed for the godbeings to fulfill their purpose. Just a suddenly as they came, so suddenly they depart.

Without the foundations of godbeings walking through earthplanet, the world spins precipitously along its dissolving axis. Nothing can stop it. The dreams of the last human beings are a release of distorted beliefs as the life energy of the planet moves closer to the surface. Awakening to hidden grief and desires, the stronger souls endure this release. For others, the inner closets harboring their darkest emotions and thoughts are thrown open, releasing the charged energies that have kept them enthralled with their passions. Streams of souls bound by their illusions and passions, many having endured millennia of unrelieved suffering, rise from the depths of earthplanet’s dark tunnels of illusion. They are collected by gossamer angels, who are the finest imagined beings within the greater godbeing’s worldspace dream, and are harvested for whatever light they have left. Nothing within the imagination of human souls can grapple with this ascension. Dissolving all around them like mist from a mountain valley, the dense dreams of waking consciousness are absorbed into the vast planes of being that are the body of the greater godbeing beyond. The last gasp of human knowing dissolves into the surging waves of being. All that is left is the vital matrix of earthplanet possibilities, which retreats into the greater godbeing beyond like threads unraveling from an old garment.

Never having been without a planetary form to absorb its attention, the greater godbeing beyond contemplates its existence to a depth never attended to before. Layer upon layer of unexamined self fall away, leaving it perched upon its defining reality, its first astonishment that it exists. In an instantaneous moment, it knows the possibility of cosmic madness. It is disturbed to the edge. Energy is coming. As it merges into the truth that lies beyond its intent, the edge dissolves. Nothingness reigns. Nothingness is.
